Are You Ready for Mt Wandera?

At Sea Otter Australia, we are thrilled to offer shuttle uplifts taking riders to the top of the Mt Wandera Burnaaga Adventure Trail at Mogo Trails! We’ve received a lot of inquiries from riders eager to get out there and experience it for themselves.

Embark on an epic adventure from Mogo!

If you’ve been wondering whether this ride is right for you, we’ve put together a breakdown of what to expect, how to prepare, and why this wilderness trail is a must-add to your mountain biking bucket list.

What is the Mt Wandera / Burnaaga Trail?

Named Burnaaga (the word for Goanna in the local Dhurga language), this trail is a thrilling, 29km journey from the summit of Mt Wandera all the way back into the welcoming embrace of Mogo Town.

It is designed for gravity-fueled, well-experienced riders who love a real wilderness experience and have the endurance to match.

  • Distance: 29km from the summit drop-off to Mogo Town
  • Descent: 962 vertical metres of adrenaline-fueled descending
  • Climbing: 406 vertical metres of climbing across two main valleys
  • Estimated Time: 3 to 4 hours (taking your time to enjoy the views and breaks)
  • Trail Rating: Blue (recommended for highly experienced gravity and adventure riders)

The Terrain & Skill Level: What to Expect

The trail offers an incredible variety of environments as you descend through deep, rainforest-like canopy, across sandy open singletrack, and over fast, flowy bush trails. One of the absolute highlights of the ride is navigating the stunning granite rock formations and massive boulder sections scattered along the trail.

Is it technically difficult?

While rated Blue, it requires good bike handling and trail confidence:

  • The Top Section: The very top of Mt Wandera is the trickiest technical section.
  • Rollable Features: Almost all granite features and rock slabs are rollable, and there are always 1 or 2 alternate B-lines around the main drops or steep rollers.
  • Smart Riding: Take your time, look ahead, and pull over to inspect features on foot before dropping in blindly.

Is Mt Wandera Right for Me?

This isn’t just a quick lap at a bike park—it’s a true 29km wilderness adventure. To get the absolute most out of your ride, consider the following:

1. Fitness & Endurance

With 406m of elevation gain interspersed throughout the descent, this trail will test your legs and lungs as much as your skills. Intermediate to advanced riders with solid endurance will feel right at home pacing themselves through the two valley climbs.

2. Self-Reliance & Preparation

Because Burnaaga immerses you deep into the landscape, there are no quick “exit points” once you commit to the trail. You’ll want to pack as if you’re going on an expedition:

  • Hydration: Carry a Camelbak or large hydration pack.
  • Nutrition: Pack plenty of energy gels, chews, or nutrient-dense bars to refuel during breaks.
  • Tools & Spares: Bring spare tubes/plugs, a hand pump or CO2, a multi-tool, and a chain quick-link.

3. Peace of Mind on the Trail

While it has a remote, back-country vibe, you are never truly isolated:

  • Great Coverage: The track has surprisingly good mobile phone reception along the way.
  • A Great Community: Burnaaga is a flagship trail, so you’ll share the track with plenty of friendly, like-minded riders ready to lend a hand if you ever run into mechanical trouble.
  • Scenery & Break Spots: Take advantage of numerous scenic vantage points to rest, take in the breathtaking views, and soak up the raw natural beauty.

The Verdict

If you have solid trail experience, love a mix of technical granite features and flowy descents, and are excited by a big day out in the bush, Mt Wandera is calling your name!

Pack your pack, check your bike, and get ready for an unforgettable 29km journey from the mountains down to Mogo Town.
