When you think of SMITH, a lot might come to mind—your go‑to sunglasses, a helmet that saved your bacon, or that classic yellow sticker on your parents’ gearbox. Today, SMITH is all about gearing you up for whatever adventure comes next. But it all started 60 years ago with one simple idea: make a better goggle.
Back in 1964, Dr. Bob Smith—an orthodontist who lived for powder days at Alta—was tired of fogged lenses and snow‑packed vents. So he and his wife, Jean, sat down at their kitchen table and built something better. Using dental tools and mountain know‑how, Dr. Bob created the world’s first insulated dual‑lens goggle.
That dual‑lens design, paired with foam‑insulated vents and a snug‑fit strap, changed everything. It created a warm air pocket between the lenses, dramatically reducing fog and boosting clarity—technology that still underpins goggle design today.
Dr. Bob started small, selling goggles to fellow skiers (sometimes in exchange for lift tickets). By 1968, he secured a U.S. patent, cementing the blueprint for modern snow optics.
Since then, SMITH has kept that spirit of innovation alive—introducing magnetic lens changes, expanded fields of view, and seamless goggle‑helmet integration. Six decades on, we’re still pushing boundaries with the same mentality Dr. Bob had at his kitchen table: solve real problems so you can see more, do more, and go harder in the mountains.
