The Ultimate Guide to the Southern Hemisphere’s Biggest Bike Party

If someone in your life hasn’t stopped talking about Sea Otter Australia, or if you noticed the tidal wave of excitement that swept through the NSW South Coast during our inaugural 2025 event, you might be wondering: what actually is the fuss about?

Whether you were one of the 9,000 trailblazers who joined us in Batemans Bay last year, a brand looking at the massive growth Sea Otter has been driving across the Australian cycling scene, or a rider who heard whispers of the festival but stayed home, this guide is for you.

Here is everything you need to know about the legacy, the energy, the sponsors, and why 23–25 October 2026 needs to be locked firmly into your calendar.

The 35-Year Legacy: From Monterey to Batemans Bay

To understand Sea Otter Australia, you have to look at where it all began. Over 35 years ago, the Sea Otter Classic was born in Monterey, California, growing into the world’s largest and most iconic cycling festival. Why Sea Otter – the original Festival is named after the Sea Otters who call the Monterey Bay kelp forests home and it has stuck for almost four decades, now established as the biggest bike festival brand in the World.

Under an exclusive 10-year license held by Rocky Trail Entertainment, Sea Otter Australia brought that legendary vibe Down Under. Alongside Sea Otter Europe in Girona, Spain, Batemans Bay is home to one of only two officially licensed Sea Otter events outside the United States.

“Getting more people into nature on bikes is what we live for… Sea Otter Australia is not only a massive bike party with racing and expo but also a catalyst for regional economic growth, attracting significant visitors to the region and, not least, establishing a lasting legacy for the sport.” – Juliane Wisata, CEO of Sea Otter Australia

Mogo Trails: Purpose-Built as the “Home of Sea Otter Australia”

Juliane Wisata, who is one of the Rocky Trail Founders explained that choosing the right canvas for an international flagship event of the caliber that is Sea Otter required more than just scenic views. It takes vision, deep passion, and a trail system designed to welcome every kind of rider.

That is precisely why Rocky Trail’s owners selected Batemans Bay and spent years managing the detailed design, development, and build of the Mogo Trails as an internationally significant network – in terms of scale and variety of trails. This resulted in Mogo Trails being selected as the “Home of Sea Otter Australia”. Delivering 125 kilometres of world-class, purpose-built singletrack, the network reflects the exact same participation-first ethos as the festival itself: it was explicitly designed for everyone. Spanning everything from smooth, confidence-building green rollable and fun, flowing blue trails, all the way to high-adrenaline black and double-black diamond gravity trails as well as epic descents like the Burnaaga Adventure Trail on Mount Wandera, Mogo Trails ensures that first-time groms, adaptive riders, weekend warriors, pinners and pro racers can all find their ultimate line on the exact same mountain.

The Southern Hemisphere’s Largest Bike Expo: Bigger, Louder, and Packed with World Firsts

With ten official races and events at Mogo Trails plus social rides through out the Festival and shuttled rides to Burnaaga and Narooma Trails, at the beating heart of the festival lies the Expo at Hanging Rock Sports Precinct. For 2026, it is leveling up in a massive way.

Expanding its footprint by over 30% from our inaugural year, the venue will play host to close to 250 Australian and global brands, creating a buzzing Festival village that you simply have to see to believe. The energy on the floor is set to be insane: expect non-stop sponsor activations, giant giveaways, overflowing show bags, our “Rock & Roll MC’s” roaming the pits and exclusive autograph sessions with world-class pro athletes and international stars.

Beyond the hype, this is where the Australian and global cycling industry comes to flex – featuring major international product launches, exclusive first-looks, and the largest concentration of interactive bike and eBike demos ever assembled in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you’re a rider hunting for your next dream rig, a kid collecting stickers, or a retailer scouting the market, the 2026 Expo floor is where the future of cycling comes to life.
